Looking Downtown – from Balboa Park

September 13, 2009 By larry groff

painting of downtown San Diego and I-5 and the 163
View from Balboa Park of Downtown San Diego, I-5 and the 163, Oil on linen 30″ x 40″ 9/09

This is a painting done from Balboa Park looking out over I-5 and the 163. For those who know the area I was painting in the overlook section behind the Air and Space Musuem. I worked on this off and on over the summer and just finished it a few days ago. I will need to take another photo, this one the greens aren’t accurate and has a slight diffuse glare on the painting that throws off the color somewhat. But gives you an idea of what I’ve been up to and satisfies my impatient need to show the world the fruits of my labor…

This painting hits me right in the solar plexus, and, like all good paintings, makes me want to drop everything and paint a picture myself. Thanks for the inspiration.

Awesome work, Larry! What a feat capturing the complexities of the city landscape. Went through your entire online collection and am blown away by your work. A definite feel for light and atmosphere! Love the bridges and industrial subjects. Would think you’d like to come paint here in NC. We have great ports, boatyards, historic Beaufort (home of Blackbeard), the outer banks, and more than a few old rusty cars and tobacco barns I think you’d do wonders with. Hope to make it out your way at some point to paint the hazy atmosphere y’all have in the cities, the California vineyards, and the mountains.

Thanks Jimmy, I’m thrilled you took the time to look at my work so thoroughly. If you return here in a week or so I plan to upload a few new paintings I’ve made recently. Sadly, I been falling behind on keeping my website up to date with my work. I’ve never painting in the south before but I was born in Charleston South Carolina and spent many years living in SC and have a lot of family down there. I never spent much time in NC though, someday I hope I can explore the outer banks. I peeked at your website, loved your stove painting and the Studio Corner painting with the coffee cans and what not.

There is something compelling about roads intersecting and you capture it in such a compelling way.

I really like this; reminds me of Edward Hopper- that’s a big compliment!

Thanks Will I appreciate big compliments like yours! Edward Hopper is some pretty big footsteps to follow but I like to go in a similar direction.
