White House on top of Madra, 12/10, Oil on panel 11 x 14 inches
I jog and walk up this steep hill near where I live almost every other day. I am continually struck by the light, views and the pictorial structural possibilities of the architecture contrasted with foliage in this upscale Del Cerro neighborhood. I was initially shy about painting on this street as it is so close to where I live and that it didn’t offer much shelter from fast moving cars or shade (I had a few people come out to tell me to watch out for speeders as a person just walking on the sidewalk was struck and killed a few years back by someone driving down the hill too fast and lost control…) I’ve seen a number of other paintings I want to do along this road in the near future.

Break in the Storm, 04/10, Oil on panel 11 x 14 inches
Some relatively new works. I’ve decided to work more in the city and to concentrate more on architectural forms for the time being. It allows me to explore new ways of putting together a picture as well as thinking about color. These paintings were all done in the North Park area of San Diego. I’m excited about finding some new subjects and I think I’m starting to be a little more daring about where to set up my easel. I also just started a new large painting (36″ x 48″) on a busy street corner in Hillcrest of the 24 hour Fitness and Hillcrest Theater Mall complex that just knocks me out the way the early morning light hits their intensely multi-colored walls and funky-abstract shaped California-style mall architecture.

Under the 805, Oil on canvas 36x 48 inches 11/29/09
I think I’ve finished this, at least I plan to leave it alone for awhile. I’ve been working on the the past few weeks, under the 805 where it meets Rt 8 – in the parking lot for Dave and Busters. I am ready to move on to my next project up in the mountains.

North Park Intensely – 28th and University, Oil on linen 20″ x 24″ 10/09
Looking over University Ave from 28th street. I painted this on site over several days. Meet a number of interesting people. On the right you see my favorite place for breakfast in San Diego – The Mission.
