Salton Sea

Back in November I was lucky to meet and get to paint for a few days with the terrific painters: Joe Forkan, Andrew Dickson, Eric Merrell, and Yu Ji out at the Salton Sea. We stayed at Andrew Dickson’s grandparents home which was a short walk to the Sea. (fascinating place for those not familiar with it.) I hope to get back here soon as I felt I didn’t have time to get comfortable enough with the place to allow me to fully explore it’s potential. I tend to have trouble painting and travel but here is what I managed to come up with.

Here are a few from the many studies I made while at the JSS Certosa Program in Siena, Italy this past summer. A fabulous experience that was too overwhelming to get into explaining now. Great people, ideas, art, and views – loved it!

going to italy for six weeks to paint

June 9, 2010 By larry groff

I will be leaving for Rome in a few weeks where Liz and I will see great art and great eats for several days and then go to Sorrento for a few more days. She will then fly back to San Diego while l go off to Siena to join a workshop with Israel Hershberg, Stuart Shils, Ken Krewley and Lennart Anderson for four weeks.

I decided to not bring a laptop with me, instead I plan to bring an iPad. I am testing out the iPad right now, the typing is a bit clunky, with typing directly on the screen but half the problem is that I need to trim my nails! I’m also using this as a test to see if I can post to my blog and painting perceptions using this word press app for the iPad. I’ll try to insert an image after I see if this works.

Testing how to edit a day later.

More new urban scenes

Coin Laundry, 04/10, Oil on panel 12 x 16 inches

New Life Laundry, 04/10, Oil on linen 10 x 20 inches

Theater Parking, 04/10, Oil on panel 11 x 14 inches

Break in the Storm, 04/10, Oil on panel 11 x 14 inches

Some relatively new works. I’ve decided to work more in the city and to concentrate more on architectural forms for the time being. It allows me to explore new ways of putting together a picture as well as thinking about color. These paintings were all done in the North Park area of San Diego. I’m excited about finding some new subjects and I think I’m starting to be a little more daring about where to set up my easel. I also just started a new large painting (36″ x 48″) on a busy street corner in Hillcrest of the 24 hour Fitness and Hillcrest Theater Mall complex that just knocks me out the way the early morning light hits their intensely multi-colored walls and funky-abstract shaped California-style mall architecture.

Igneous Drama

March 29, 2010 By larry groff

Igneous Drama, 03/10, Oil on linen 16 x 20 inches

A painting I recently finished. Done on Mt Woodson next to a large vernal pond. I found the drama of the way the rock and tree shapes interacted particularly captivating – I hope I did the scene justice.
